Music publishing is how producers, songwriters, and other music creators get paid for the composition side of a song—things like melody, lyrics, and music.

Publishing royalties are the earnings from this composition. They come from streams, radio play, live performances, TV, and more—sources that don’t pay artists directly. While streaming platforms like Spotify pay you for the master royalties, that’s just one half – publishing royalties ensure that you get paid for your songwriting contributions.

If I don’t have any songs, why should I sign up to Publishing?

Even if you haven’t released a song yet, signing up ensures that when you do, you’re set up to collect every royalty you’re owed. Many creators miss out on earnings because they don’t have their publishing in place before their music is released. Getting started now saves you the hassle of worrying about lost royalties down the road.

I don’t sell any beats. Do I still need Publishing?

Yes! Publishing isn’t just for beat sellers—it’s for any music creator who contributes to the creation of the song. This can include producers, songwriters/lyricists, session musicians, composers, and topliners. If your music is streamed or performed in any way, having BeatStars Publishing ensures you have a team dedicated to collecting those royalties for you.

I released a song on Spotify. Do I need Publishing?

Definitely – if your music is on Spotify, you’re only getting paid for the recording (master) side. But every stream also generates publishing royalties, which Spotify and other DSPs don’t pay you directly. BeatStars Publishing helps you collect those missing earnings.

Can I collect publishing royalties if I already sold my beat?

It depends. If the license you sold includes publishing splits, you’re entitled to your share. Even with an exclusive sale, you’ll still be owed royalties unless you explicitly waived your publishing rights. It’s always a good idea to clarify your splits in the license terms to ensure you get the royalties you deserve.

If I don’t sign up for Publishing, what happens to my royalties?

They go unclaimed and sit in a “black box” until they eventually get distributed to others. You could be missing out on money that rightfully belongs to you.

Does BeatStars Publishing take ownership of my music?

No, you keep 100% ownership of your songs. We just help you collect the royalties you’re owed.

How long is the agreement with BeatStars Publishing?

The term period lasts for 1 year and auto-renews for 1 year if you do not terminate 30 days prior to the renewal date. After termination, there’s also a 1 year retention period on all songs registered during your term. This means that after you terminate, you’re free to register new songs with another publisher, but we’ll continue to collect royalties on the songs you’ve already registered with us for another year. You will be paid during term and retention periods and are not at risk of losing any royalties.
